Yacht Carpet Installation in South Florida: What You Actually Need to Know
If you are thinking about replacing the carpet on your yacht, you probably have a few basic questions. What type of carpet should you use? Do you need to replace everything at once? How is the carpet measured around stairs and built-ins? How much does it cost? How long does the installation take? Those are the questions that matter, so let's answer them.
What Type of Carpet Is Best for a Yacht?
There is no single carpet that works best in every yacht.
The right choice depends on where it is going, how much traffic the area gets, how you want it to feel, and how it fits with the rest of the interior.
A master stateroom may call for something softer and more luxurious. A salon or companionway may need something that handles more traffic while still looking appropriate for the space.
Color, texture, pattern, and construction all matter.
The best approach is to choose the carpet based on the room and how that part of the yacht is actually used.
You can see examples of completed installations in our Yacht Flooring Gallery.
Do I Need to Replace All the Carpet at Once?
No.
You can replace one area without replacing the entire yacht.
Common individual projects include:
- Salons
- Staterooms
- Stairs
- Companionways
- Crew quarters
The main thing to consider is how the new carpet will look next to the flooring that is staying. If the original carpet is still available, matching may be possible. If it has been discontinued or has changed noticeably with age, it may make more sense to choose something that complements it rather than trying to create an imperfect match.
Can Carpet Be Fitted Around Stairs, Hatches and Built-In Furniture?
Yes.
These are normal parts of a yacht carpet installation.
The installer has to account for stairs, hatches, cabinetry, beds, furniture, access panels, transitions, and any other features that affect the shape of the floor.
Depending on the area, measurements may be enough. More complicated spaces may need to be templated before the carpet is prepared.
The goal is a clean fit around the existing interior.
How Do You Measure Carpet for a Yacht?
It depends on the space.
Straightforward areas can often be measured normally. Areas with curves, stairs, hatches, or unusual shapes may require more detailed measurements or templates.
This is also why estimating a yacht carpet project based only on square footage can be misleading.
Two rooms with the same square footage can require very different amounts of work.

What Happens to the Existing Carpet?
For most replacement projects, the old carpet is removed first.
Once it is out, the surface underneath can be checked before the new carpet goes in.
Sometimes very little preparation is needed. Other times there may be old adhesive, uneven areas, or other conditions that need to be addressed before installation.
That part of the job can affect both the timeline and the final estimate.
Can You Match My Existing Yacht Carpet?
Sometimes.
If the same carpet is still available and the existing material has not changed significantly over time, matching may be possible.
The harder situation is when the carpet has been discontinued, faded, worn, or changed color with age.
In those cases, trying to force an exact match may actually make the difference more noticeable.
A complementary carpet can sometimes look better than a close but obviously different match.
How Much Does Yacht Carpet Installation Cost?
There is no useful flat price that applies to every project.
The biggest factors are:
- Which carpet you choose
- How much carpet is being replaced
- Removal of the existing flooring
- Preparation underneath
- Stairs and other detailed areas
- Custom fitting or templating
- Access to the yacht
- Overall installation complexity
Replacing the carpet in one stateroom is obviously going to be a different project from replacing the salon, stairs, companionways, guest cabins, and crew areas. That is why we prefer to look at the actual project before giving an estimate.

How Long Does Yacht Carpet Installation Take?
It depends on how much of the yacht is being done.
A single room may be relatively straightforward. A larger refit involving several areas will require more time.
The schedule can also depend on:
- Removal of the old flooring
- Preparation work
- Material availability
- Stairs and detailed fitting
- Access to the yacht
- Whether the work needs to be coordinated around other trades
For larger projects, we can coordinate with captains, crew, yacht managers, designers, project managers, and shipyards so the flooring work fits into the overall schedule.
Can Carpet Be Replaced While the Yacht Is in a Shipyard?
Yes.
A lot of flooring work is completed while a yacht is already undergoing service or an interior refit.
The important part is coordination.
If several trades are working onboard at the same time, the flooring needs to be scheduled so installers have access to the areas they need without interfering with other work.
It can also be completed while the yacht is at a marina or another suitable location depending on the project.
Is Yacht Carpet Different From Regular Carpet?
Not necessarily.
The carpet used in a yacht does not need to be marketed as some special "marine-grade" carpet.
Many of the same high-quality materials used in luxury homes and other high-end interiors can also be used aboard yachts.
What matters is choosing the right material for the space and installing it properly.
That is why we focus more on the carpet itself, the design, and how the area is used than on marketing terminology.
When Should Yacht Carpet Be Replaced?
There is no fixed number of years.
Replacement usually comes down to condition and appearance.
You may want to replace the carpet if it is:
- Worn
- Stained
- Faded
- Damaged
- Difficult to clean
- No longer consistent with the yacht's interior
Sometimes carpet is replaced simply because the yacht is being updated and the existing flooring no longer works with the new design. You also do not have to wait until every carpeted area needs replacement. Individual rooms can be updated separately.
What Should I Have Ready Before Asking for an Estimate?
You do not need to have everything figured out.
A few basic details are enough to start:
- Where the yacht is located
- Which areas you want to replace
- What flooring is there now
- Any colors or styles you are considering
- Your preferred timeline
Photos can also be helpful for an initial conversation, but an onboard visit may still be needed for measurements and a proper estimate.
